About OpenTrad.net

History and content

Since 2025, OpenTrad.net has taken over from the MonViolon website (which had been online since 2007).

MonViolon

Initially, MonViolon was intended to share the sheet music I wrote for my students. This was later expanded to include free/libre, traditional or new music for traditional dances and jam sessions. Finally, in its latest version, it featured a catalogue of around 9,000 entries for searching for melodies (mainly traditional ones) from over 200 sources (audio, books, web).

OpenTrad dot net

OpenTrad^.net is intended to incorporate the content of the MonViolon website, adding documentation and tutorials about the making of musical instruments (educational activities, folk instrument-making).

License

Unless otherwise stated, the images, texts, sheet music and recordings on this website are licensed under the Free Art licence. This is equivalent to the Creative Commons BY-SA licence but:

1. it’s quicker to say.
2. it’s less ambiguous.

Basically, if you want to reuse the material you find on this website for your own purposes:

1. you don’t need to ask me
2. cite your sources
3. apply the same freedoms to your own work

The last point means that you must use a licence of the same type (Free Art, CC-BY-SA, etc.) for your own work if it uses material from this site. This is the principle of copyleft (🄯). It’s viral and it’s not sad!
